I’m going to go ahead and assume you know who Chrissy Teigan is. Model, author, wife to John Legend, Twitter-user-extraordinaire. Chrissy is one of my favourite people to follow on social media, and I always know that when her name comes up in media, it’s for good reason. She is hilarious and real and someone to look up to – which is why she is this week’s Fierce Female!
Chrissy has appeared in countless magazines, advertisements and on various television shows – most notably as a co-host on Lip Sync Battle alongside LL Cool J. In 2016, she published her cookbook Cravings, which quickly became a New York Times bestseller. To fans’ delight, in April of this year she announced she will be publishing a second cookbook.
Being the social media lurker that she is (and we love her for), in April of last year, Chrissy caught wind of a crowdfunding page one of her fans had set up to cover tuition fees in order to go to beauty school. They had never met but generously, Chrissy donated the balance ($5605 USD) that the fan needed to move forward with enrollment. Her selflessness changed the fan’s life and allowed her to follow her dreams.
Following the viral spread of the #MeToo movement – a hashtag on social media used to indicate how widespread sexual harassment and sexual assault is – Chrissy and her husband John donated $200,000 USD to Time’s Up. The mission of Time’s Up is to end sexual misconduct and inequality after the public accusation (and later conviction) of Harvey Weinstein. Chrissy and John were among dozens of celebrities that donated to the cause, and stood in solidarity at this year’s Grammy Awards.
Chrissy has been a powerful advocate against the unconstitutional decisions the Trump administration has made in the United States. As one example – in June of this year, Chrissy passionately spoke at the Families Belong Together march in Los Angeles following the new ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policy set forth by the administration. She discussed how proud she is to be a daughter of in immigrant and made this powerful statement regarding Trump’s campaign slogan; “Making America great doesn’t mean building walls to keep people out; it means continuing to embrace the dreams of immigrants who add to our culture, our economy, and our humanity. Making America greater most definitely doesn’t mean turning asylum-seekers away or kidnapping their kids to turn them away from coming here.” Beyond that, on President Trump’s 72nd birthday, Chrissy and John donated $72,000 USD for each member of their family (including their two children) to ACLU – an organization dedicated to fighting for immigrant rights, reproductive rights, LGBT rights, justice reform and much more.
As if Chrissy wasn’t amazing enough already, as a mother of two, she has also been very candid about pregnancy and postpartum life. Her humorous tweets help new and pregnant moms make light of what is often a difficult time in their lives, as well as make women around the world feel validated in their career and family choices. Recently, she poked fun at the media’s unreachable standards for new moms when her husband appeared on an award show shortly after their son was born. In a tweet, she said, “wow didn’t u just have a baby John smh go take care of it !!!!!! disgusting.” But more than just making light of it, Chrissy has been completely transparent about her struggle with postpartum depression. She released an essay in Glamour magazine that highlighted everything she went through after the birth of her daughter, Luna. She said herself that she wanted to open up as postpartum depression can happen to anyone, and she doesn’t want anyone to feel alone or embarrassed as they work through it.
These are just a few of the amazing ways Chrissy has stood up for injustice and inequality, as well as continue to be a hilarious social media icon. It seems she has only just begun, and we can’t wait to see what’s to come for her!
